Production Night Live Blog for April 2

What follows is a faithful account of the production of Issue 8 (taking place the evening of April 2/early morning of April 3) as witnessed by me, The Pioneer’s Editor-in-Chief.

4:11 p.m.: I (Managing Editor Pam) am in and we are off and running for issue 8, also known as the Jack Issue! This production night is also henceforth known as the celebration of EIC Shelly’s birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHELLY, LOVE THE PIO.

4:12 p.m: Production Manager Sean is going with some old-school Destiny’s Child as the music to get us started. Feature PA Jess and I bob along. We can get down with this.

4:30 p.m.: Shelly makes me hold baking soda in my hands so she can take a “creative” photo. Why are there pictures of baking soda being taken? Read the Pio tomorrow to find out!

5:04 p.m.: Shelly asks Sean for his thoughts on her new shoes.

5:05 p.m.: Shelly and I realize that production night has turned into “let’s hate on everyone we can” night. Victims thus far include Jess (her hangry-ness) and Dylan (for forgetting to do lots of things).

5:07 p.m.: We are currently operating without two working computers… The culprits? A not-syncing DropBox and terrifyingly awful-sounding clunking coming from another computer.

6:40 p.m.: Dinner time at the Pio office. We’ve had a bit of a hectic beginning but it’s starting to simmer down now.

6:49 p.m.: Debate ensues in the newsroom over the pros and cons of writing a thesis.

6:54 p.m.: Jess opens page 5 to work on and sees a fake Trader Joes advertisement. Thinking it’s real, she exclaims “Trader Joes is coming to Walla Walla?!” Then we have to break her heart and tell her that it’s fake. April Fool’s Jess!

6:57 p.m.: Sports Editor Quin saunters into the newsroom, looking quite spiffy. He just came from a fancy meeting.

7:00 p.m.: Quin sees the fake Trader Joes ad. He also thinks it’s just mean. I guess it got his hopes up, too.

7:04 p.m.: Quin decides 17 mini finger sandwiches was maybe a bit too much for him…

7:21 p.m.: News co-editor Dylan asks us how to spell “ambivalent.” I spell it out for him. Dylan responds with, “wait there’s an ‘a’ in there?” Yes Dylan, it actually starts with an “a.”

7:45 p.m.: Apparently Jess will only accept “winning.” Whatever that is applied to.

8:12 p.m.: Jess asks if we heard her tummy grumble. We ask her if she’s hungry. “No…”

8:46 p.m.: Illustration Editor Luke is in the house. His first task: locate Videography Editor Skye, who is currently MIA.

8:50 p.m.: We have found Skye. I repeat we have found Skye.

8:51 p.m.: The newsroom engages in a serious discussion about the kinds of sounds ducks make.

9:48 p.m.: Opinion PA Abby completes Voices from the Ducks. Oh yea, there are some gems.
