Last year, I studied abroad in Europe and I learned that a lot of the rumors about the food over there are true. The coffee is better, the bread is better and the pastries are superb. However, when it comes to cuisine, there is one area where the USA is still number one: Snacks. There’s Doritos, Skittles, M&M’s, Takis, Icees and the list goes on and on!
Now, these brands do sell their products internationally, but with some questionable changes to the recipes. The snacks outside of the US just don’t have that special something; they’re a little too bland, a little too natural. That is because over on this side of the pond, we use a time-honored special ingredient in all of our best treats: Red 40!
Red 40 is what puts the pop in Pop Rocks, the pep in Pepsi and joy in the hearts of American children everywhere. Sure, it would probably kill a pilgrim, but they’re already dead, and what is life without Nacho Cheese Doritos anyway? Sounds pretty bleak to me.
Now, imagine my dismay when I find out that many European countries avoid using our beloved Red-40 in their snacks because it allegedly causes hyperactivity in young children (uptight much?). I mean, so what if the kids get a little boost? Whatever helps you get through the day, am I right, folks?
So, if you are a snack loving, red (40) blooded American like myself, consider packing some extra provisions before your next European getaway. In fact, why not pack a whole suitcase full of good old American snacks to share with those poor little European kids? They don’t even know what they’re missing! I mean, really take a second and try to imagine a childhood where your Hot Cheetos don’t even dye your fingers red. Breaks my heart just thinking about it. If we work together, we can make sure no child has to face such difficult realities.
