Tensions are rising in the Spirituality House, where just one year into its tenure on campus, the newest IHC member may be experiencing its first split.
In just three weeks since the beginning of the semester, a sharp doctrinal divide has emerged between the north and south sides of the house. Contentious issues include the distribution of chores, whether to wear shoes inside and when is too early to start decorating for Halloween.
The Resident Assistant (RA) has largely sided with the northern sect and has made an attempt to use their authority to end the dispute. However, the southern sect countered that the RA is not the ultimate authority on housing policy; that role belongs to the Community Director (CD).
At first the CD refused to intervene, hoping the issue would be resolved on its own. However, recent escalations have made it impossible to ignore.
This past Tuesday, the southern sect appointed their own leader within the house, and the northern sect retaliated by issuing a public decree declaring the southern leader illegitimate and refusing to send aid in the battle between the northern sect and the towering mountain of dirty dishes in the sink.
With her hand now forced, the CD has begun issuing calls for unity. After a public speech in which she reminded members of the Spirituality House of how much they had in common and emphasized the importance of ‘loving thy neighbor,’ the CD gave an interview with The Wire where she said, “I hope this issue can be resolved before it escalates to violence, or before the tape line through the house ruins the floor.”
