What follows is a faithful account of the production of Issue 1 (taking place the evening of Jan. 29/early morning of Jan. 30.) as witnessed by me, The Pioneer’s Editor-in-Chief.
5:13 p.m.: Production Associates Jesse and Jess realize that they’ve been calling Graphic Artist Julie “Josie.” Jesse: “I was telling her, ‘This is going to be awkward, because I’m Jesse, she’s Jess, and you’re Josie,’ and she just smiled!.”
5:17 p.m.: I yell out that I started the live blog. Illustration Editor Luke’s response: “WHOOO!”
5:23 p.m.: Pizza Pam AKA Managing Editor Pam comes in with Production Night Pizza from Big Cheese! Yay!!
5:25 p.m.: The Queen of the Production Night Live Blog AKA Pam is taking over!
6:38 p.m.: It took a while, but the Queen of the Live Blog reigns.
6:42 p.m.: Graphic Artist Julie is telling the story of how a next-door neighbor of hers keeps goats in the backyard. Let the record show that we all missed Julie and are glad she’s back.
6:45 p.m.: Julie is showing off her off-campus study pride – she is wearing an Ecuador soccer jersey and a name tag from her “Welcome Back Study Abroaders” dinner.
6:57 p.m.: News co-editor Dylan is officially Senator Dylan in the newsroom this evening.
7:43 p.m.: Copy editing ensues, everything is ready but News (see what I did there?).
7:56 p.m.: Updating the masthead with the new Pio staffers – exciting!
8:12 p.m.: The Pio has achieved new levels of Facebook stalking tonight: is it the U.S. Virgin Islands or the British Virgin Islands? Now we know.
8:20 p.m.: Shelly and I compare contact lens prescriptions – she is -12, I’m -7.5 and -8. I had only ever met one other person who has worse vision than me, until tonight.
9:08 p.m.: Which awesome basketball photos will end up on the front page? Too many to choose from…
10:13 p.m.: Chief Copy Editor Karah begins her rounds of all the pages.
11:55 p.m.: Nearly there…
