Fruitcake and Cookies – The Messiah Will Come Again

Hey. I’m sorry that it’s been awhile, for those who care. Things are busy here this time of year. Since it’s been such a long time I’ve decided to write about two songs in this post. I’ve been meaning to write about the first one, a classic song called “Fruitcake and Cookies” by Sweet Trip, for at least a month. Check it below:

Sweet trip formed in 1998 and released three albums since then. It is unclear whether the group is still together, but they are at least on hiatus. This song was released on their phenomenal 2003 album Velocity : Design : Comfort. It’s worth getting to know.

I’ve never really heard anything like this. But that’s probably just me. In any case, I love this song. It’s really beautiful and sweet. The textures are fascinating and satisfying. And that beat drop at 2:48 is one of my faves. This song has some wonderful rhythms, especially during that part of the song at 2:48. I love how the percussion is glitching out the whole time while the keyboards and guitar continue to strum steadily. Then, all of a sudden, there comes a massive shift from glitch to shoegaze (after “break down, baby”) that lasts for the remaining several minutes. What fun. Check out this whole album it’s totally brilliant.

Okay, this second song I just heard for the first time today. It’s called “The Messiah Will Come Again” by Roy Buchanan, from 1971. It’s really dramatic, watch out. Also, props to whoever made the video, it really captures the aura of the song:

This song has a pretty great beat drop at 2:29. One of the better ones I’ve heard in awhile. And that’s some killing guitar-playing from Buchanan. I feel like that sort of goes without saying but still. I love the organ part on this song. I would say that the organist’s playing is easily on par with Buchanan’s playing. The organist provides the backdrop here, without which Buchanan would never be able to shred so passionately.

I almost wish that the whole song was just the organ and Buchanan talking, but the way it is now is cool, too. Stay tuned for a DJ Yung Tuggboat refix of this track.

Good luck with finals, everyone. Maybe they won’t be as bad as you think.
