With over 1,600 students admitted to the Class of 2015, Whitman’s campus is buzzing with prospective students. Every year, Whitman’s Office of Admission puts together a day for admitted students which allows potential Whitties to explore the campus and get a sense of the Whitman experience. The Office of Admission anticipates 520 visitors for this year’s event, which will occur on Saturday, April 16.
Students and their families can participate in a variety of classes and informational sessions on just about everything Whitman. Different clubs, majors and student programs will hold presentations, answer questions and invite students to special events such as a Japanese tea ceremony.
Here are profiles of a few admitted students:
Paul Prevou
Hometown: Arlington, Texas
Decided between: Whitman, University of Puget Sound, and Pacific. Prevou was intent on going to college in the Pacific Northwest and Whitman was his first choice.
Proudest High School Accomplishments: Receiving the St. Timothy Award for his years of Diocesan service.
“Throughout high school, I have been actively involved in ministry and service through my home parish of St. Vincent de Paul, and have participated on the Diocesan level through the Diocesan Youth Council,” he said.
Opinion on Walla Walla: “Coming from North Texas, I’m not used to being surrounded by natural beauty, of which Walla Walla, and Washington in general, is not lacking. Also, I love that it’s a small town. Arlington is home to over 300,000 people, so the breathing room in Walla Walla is fantastic.”
Jess Good
Hometown: Marin County, California
Decided between: she applied to 8 schools and was admitted to 6. George Washington was her second choice.
High school activities: Varsity track, basketball, club soccer, hip-hop classes, student lawyer in Youth Court
“My most memorable accomplishments that I can think of were pole vaulting 10 feet, eating a fire ant and tricking everybody into thinking that the massive scar on my finger was caused by a 6-flags whale bite,” she said.
Opinion on Walla Walla: “It’s small, but I feel like Whitman has so many outdoor programs and functions on campus that the town doesn’t make the experience claustrophobic.”
Stephen Malefetsane Moerane
Hometown: Berea, Lesotho
Heard about Whitman: From current first-year Thabo Liphoto, also from Lesotho.
Decided between: College of Idaho and Whitman
High school activities: Basketball, field hockey, yoga, and started an a capella group.
“I’m quite proud of my singing group because we got a lot of accolades for it. It was also a very unique group and we had no other group to compete with,” he said.
Opinion on Walla Walla: Compared to Maseru, Walla Walla is pretty big. I haven’t looked too much into it because I’ll most definitely spend most of my time on campus anyway.
