Each week, the sports staff will pick one Whitman athlete who performed exceptionally during the previous weekend. The distinction will be judged both on the individual’s performance and his or her impact on the team.
Sophomore women’s swim captain Lauren Flynn won four individual events in back-to-back swim meets over the weekend, making her this week’s Whitman Athlete of the Week. On Friday, January 30, Flynn won 50-meter freestyle (29.04) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:02.84) against conference power University of Puget Sound.
Saturday’s meet came on the heels of Friday’s grueling match, but Flynn was still able to post two more victories for the missionaries, winning the 200-yard freestyle as well as the 200-yard butterfly. She was part of three swimmers on the women’s side to take home double victories and anchored Whitman’s ‘A’ 200-yard freestyle relay to another win.
The dual meet on Saturday was Whitman’s last regular season meet. Flynn and the rest of the Whitman Swim team will resume action over the weekend of February 13-15 at the Northwest Conference Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
