Hey. My song today is a sweet little ballad called “Take Off Your Cool”, performed by Outkast’s Andre Three-Stacks and the lovely, ultra-chill jazzpop vocalist Norah Jones. It’s simple, yet arrestingly elegant and speaks to an issue that many people may struggle with at the beginning of a relationship (or at any point in a relationship). So since we are nearing V-Day, it serves as a friendly reminder that all your significant other really wants is to get to know the actual you. How nice! Check it out here:

The pairing of Norah Jones with Andre 3000 may sound incoherent on paper, but they come together excellently on this duet. Andre’s harmonies with himself are a cool contrast to Norah Jones’ sultry whisper-like vocals (she has only one line, but then again, Andre only gets two!). Words are used appropriately sparingly on this track. Enjoy the way Andre slides into some notes from a half-step down, especially in the “Hey ya” part. Feel the passion.
This song comes from Outkast (Andre 3000 and Big Boi)’s phenomenal double-album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, each side of which showcases one member of the duo’s talents and musical interests. At age eight, it was the first album I ever purchased, much to my parents’ dismay (the album’s explicit content rating was not to be taken lightly). I initially only bought it because I liked “Roses” and “Hey Ya!”, but as the years have passed it has slowly become one of my favorite albums. I highly encourage you to give it a listen – it’s quite a trip.
But for now, peep this tune and keep your loved ones close.
