Sept 3, 2025 – Cascade Natural Gas was able to fixed the broken gas pipe yesterday evening. Following the fix, their crews then went through each building which had been closed due to precaution yesterday (Kids’ Place, Reid Campus Center, Fouts, Hunter, the Bratton Tennis Center, and College House) to check for any potential remaining gas leaks. They gave the all clear to return to business as usual today. Construction crews have now started the work assigned for Tuesday today.
Sept 2, 2025 – During the continued construction of the Junior-Senior Village, the construction crew struck a gas line, resulting in a leak that has caused closures of buildings across campus. While the Junior-Senior Village is the only closed-off area that is directly affected by the gas leak, other buildings have been closed off as a precautionary measure.
The power outage earlier this morning was also a result of the gas leak. Pacific Power shut down power to the campus to ensure that power poles in the area would not spark in the area of the gas leak. Power was then returned to buildings one by one, except for those adjacent to the leak – Boyer House, Glover Alston Intercultural Center, Kids Place, Reid Campus Center, Third Place, Bratton Tennis Center, the Dance Studio, and Fouts.
The closure at College House was the result of a reported smell by students. The administration is currently looking into other housing options in the case that residents of College House cannot return tonight. Reid Campus Center was closed due to its proximity to the Junior-Senior Village construction site. The gas leak was around the Dance Center and the GAIC, so Reid Campus Center was closed in case of a wind change that could potentially bring the gas toward Reid.
It is currently unknown when these buildings will be reopened. Gina Zandy Ohnstad has told the Wire that there will be a larger communication to the campus community later today when more information is available.
In our communications with Gina Zandy Ohnstad, we have been told that for the construction crew to reach the gas line, they will need to tear up Boyer Avenue. They are unsure about the amount of time this will take. In the meantime, the Junior-Senior Village has been evacuated, so construction of the dorms will be delayed until the gas leak can be fixed.
In the event that College House is not reopened tonight, the administration is currently finding alternative housing options for affected students. The administration is working diligently to get answers to students and find the best way to move forward in solving the gas leak.
This is a breaking story and will be updated with further information as it is made available.
