This year’s Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature, Louie Psihoyos’s The Cove, will screen this Sunday, April 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kimball Theatre. I reviewed this film, after it received an Oscar nod, earlier this semester as it came out on DVD and recommended it for its ambitious, activist-style documentary filmmaking. With the slaughter of dolphins in its critical crosshairs, it will likely touch many Whitties’ hearts with a seamless narrative that intertwines idealism and realism to achieve an inspirational dramatic effect. If you’re not intrigued by its inspirational undertone, see it for its accomplishment in documentary filmmaking. Unlike in the major Oscar categories, a poor film typically does not win Best Documentary and The Cove is no exception. Enjoyable, visceral, and emotive, The Cove practices honesty and justice in an attempt to expose and correct one of the long-running dirty little secrets America’s amusement parks have, until now, kept neatly tucked away from its public.
