Silly costumes and lacrosse sticks are not the typical outfit combination students might expect to encounter when walking across Ankney Field. However, last week, the women’s lacrosse team was seen dressed up in crazy outfits to bring attention to and celebrate the start of their spring 2014 season. This annual tradition not only embodies the lacrosse team’s fun loving attitude towards the sport, but also happens to come with anticipated news. After much deliberation, the Whitman women’s lacrosse team has been granted funding, and in 2016 will officially become a varsity sport.
Originally based off of the Iroquois style of play, lacrosse has evolved significantly over the years from its roots. It has gained widespread national attention as a growing popular sport both in the east and west up to the professional level.
The Whitman women's lacrosse team wrapped up a long and successful season Sunday with a victory over Gonzaga University to claim third place overall at the Northwest Women's Lacrosse League championship tournament. The third-place finish was the highest for the team in the history of the club.
