Whitman’s women’s volleyball team had two special games this weekend. On Friday, Oct. 25, they hosted Pacific University for Dig Pink night, a night dedicated to honoring survivors, victims and those currently diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, on Saturday, Oct. 26, they hosted George Fox University on Senior Night. Unfortunately, the team finished 0-2 on the weekend.
Friday night’s game began after a moving ceremony during which both teams honored loved ones who have had or currently have breast cancer. The team carried the emotion onto the court and put forth an exciting effort. After surrendering 0-1 and 1-2 leads to Pacific, Whitman rallied to tie the first-to-three series twice before finally bowing out in a nail-biting finish. Whitman’s effort was led by standout performances from Jillian Davis, Hannah Linsenmayer and Megan Bafus in particular. Davis led her team with 25 kills on 61 total attempts, tied for a team leading three aces and finished second on the team with 18 digs. Linsenmayer tied Davis with three aces of her own and led the team with 35 digs. Bafus finished second on the team with 11 kills on 34 attempts.
Whitman could not seem to muster the same kind of effort the following night against George Fox, however, as they lost the match in four sets, winning the first set but losing three straight to follow. The same players from the night before, however, continued their excellent play. Davis tallied 18 kills on 62 attempts and Linsenmayer registered 26 digs. Taylor Aschenbrenner also recorded a match-high of 45 assists.
