On November 3, 2013, the three hours of the third ASWC Senate meeting were packed with the passage of two amendments and the approval of a finance request as well as much impassioned discussion.
ASWC officially purchased a new theme for its website and looks to implement it soon. The first ASWC newsletter was published; look for the next one on November 27th!
ASWC President Tim Reed reported that the SEC will introduce a comprehensive alumni database available to students by January.
Trap Shooting Club’s request for $840 to cover clay pigeons for 28 people at six events was passed. Interest in Trap Shooting Club continues to grow; its listserv has more than 100 members. The club requires event participants to view a safety video prior to attending an event. While the club can now purchase clay pigeons, shells are not provided.
The Executive Council explained its upcoming presentation to the Board of Trustees, which will address issues with enrollment (improving the website and retention) and ASWC’s support for the Counseling Center’s search to add a staff member who can address issues specifically related to diversity and being a person of color.
The latter engendered an extensive and impassioned debate. Many senators supported expanding this presentation to include a need for a counselor to address LGBTQ issues, while others did not want to subordinate race in the pursuit of inclusivity.
The senate voted to amend the resolution to be presented to the Board to include race and gender identity. In the resolution, ASWC calls upon Whitman to pursue adding counselors who can address race, sexual orientation and gender identity. Overall, the resolution establishes the need for another counseling position.
The senate also passed Bylaw Amendment 13.3, which authorizes the Finance Chair to oversee the lifecycle fund for replacing equipment for campus media organizations. Previously, a committee of media heads oversaw these allocations.
