The drive east along Highway 12 from the Tri-Cities back towards Walla Walla and the Whitman campus rarely fails to amaze me. At the left turn by Wallula Gap, I stare west at the vast expanse of land carved out by the ancient Missoula floods, captured by the exposed magnificence of the land in all its contours and forms and patterns.

Gay and civil rights activists celebrated a massive victory in Washington State as Governor Christine Gregoire signed the bill to legalize same-sex marriage into law last Monday, Feb. 13. The bill, which appeared to slide through the Washington State Senate and House of Representatives with ease, was in fact met with some opposition.

Whitties react to the Washington legislature passing same sex marriage

The Washington State House of Representatives voted 55 to 43 on Wednesday, February 7 to allow same sex marriages. This, following the senate voting in favor of same sex marriage last week and Gov. Gregoire's pledge to sign the bill, makes Washington poised to be the seventh U.S. state, in addition to Washington, D.C., to allow same sex marriages. Washington could begin offering same sex marriages 90 days after the governor signs the bill into law. Whitman College students react to the news.
