Whitman college drug use by the numbers

Data collected from the first 100 responses of a campus-wide mail survey.

By the numbers

80% of students surveyed believe that Whitman has a drug scene.
42% of students surveyed believe that drugs are just as common at Whitman as any other U.S. college or university.

69% of students surveyed have used an illegal drug, aside from alcohol or prescription medications, at least once in their lifetime.
71% of these students used at least one illegal drug for the first time before coming to Whitman, 29% used their first illegal drug while at Whitman.

100% of students who have ever used an illegal drug have used marijuana.
32% of students who have ever used an illegal drug have used shrooms.
19% of students who have ever used an illegal drug have used acid.
7% of students who have ever used an illegal drug have used cocaine.
6% of students who have ever used an illegal drug have used a form of ecstasy.

97% of students who have ever used an illegal drug attributed their reason for doing so to “fun with friends.”
8% of students who have ever used an illegal drug attributed their reason for doing so to depression.
19% of students who have ever used an illegal drug attributed their reason for doing so to boredom.
57% of students who have ever used an illegal drug attributed their reason for doing so to curiosity.

Out of 100 surveyed students, 31% are affiliated with the greek system. Of those affiliated with the greek system, 84% have ever used an illegal drug.

Out of 100 surveyed students, 15% are varsity athletes. Of those athletes, 40% have ever used an illegal drug.

Out of 100 surveyed students, 33% are intramural athletes. Of those athletes, 66% have ever used an illegal drug.

Out of 100 surveyed students, 25% are musicians. Of those musicians, 80% have ever used an illegal drug.

Out of 100 surveyed students, 54% are women. Of those women, 72% have ever used an illegal drug.

Out of 100 surveyed students, 46% are men. Of those men, 65% have ever used an illegal drug.

Out of 100 surveyed students, 15% are Biology majors. Of those biology majors, 73% have ever used an illegal drug, which is the highest percentage of all other represented majors on this survey.

    Biology majors? That’s interesting; does having a significant science background affect whether or not people can make informed decisions about drug use? If so, then what does this suggest about the health affects of illegal drugs…
