KWCW Show of the Week: My Music Mishmosh

Martina Pansze, A&E

Tuning in to the radio Wednesday mornings, listeners never know what to expect. Alex Ayal is the host of a radio show that is unique for its extreme variability of genres.

In the psychology major’s show “My Music Mishmosh,” Ayal plays jazz, electronic, metal, solo piano, and Celtic music.

“I like emotional music, like music that can affect you in some way, and that can vary a lot. It can be a pretty solo piano piece or a loud death metal song,” he said.

Ayal’s musical choices are partially inspired by classes he has taken for his music minor.

“The [Music History and Jazz Theory] classes I’ve taken here have fundamentally changed and expanded my music taste,” said Ayal.

Ayal also plays piano, drums, and guitar, which has influenced his tastes and fueled his interest in piano solos.

“It seems far fetched to think that someone would like all the music I play,” he said. “Taste is so varied and depends on so many different factors.”

Ayal’s goal is to show listeners music that might open them to a new band or genre. “If I play all this different music, then there’s a chance someone will find something they didn’t even know they would like.”

The morning time slot doesn’t influence what music Ayal plays. “I started off one show with a ten-minute death metal song. It’s just what I’m feeling,” he said.

Although Ayal names each song and artist before playing it on air, he tries not to talk too much during his show. “I like to think of music as speaking for itself,” he said. “If you’re compelled to find out more about it, that’s awesome, but I like to leave that to listener, because they know what they like. I only play what I like.”

This semester is the first that Ayal has hosted “My Music Mishmosh.” However, he did host a show his first year of almost the opposite premise. His older show had a theme each week that the music reflected.

“This one I like better because it’s more free form,” he said.

“My Music Mishmosh” airs Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
