Students to Teach Creative Writing at the Washington State Penitentiary

A group of 15 students will begin teaching creative writing at the Washington State Penitentiary in a few weeks. They hope to increase dialogue between inmates and community members by publishing a literary journal of the inmates' work.

Whitman in China program celebrates 30-year anniversary

Alumni of the Whitman in China program gather this weekend, Sep. 28—30, to celebrate the program’s 30-year anniversary. Since its creation in 1982, the program has been sending Whitman graduates to China to teach English for one year.

Whitman cracks list of top contributors to Teach for America

Whitman's recently graduated class of 2012 is the 16th top contributor in the small schools category to the Teach for America program, sending 12 students. Teach for America, a growing nonprofit program of about 33,000 members, takes employees, teachers and college graduates and places them into schools in low-income communities around the country. Each employee of the program works as a full-time teacher in their school district.
