Whitman ranks as the fifth top contributor to Teach for America among small liberal arts schools. The program offers incredible opportunities to students coming out of college, but also presents numerous challenges. Whitman alumni discuss their Teach for America experiences and why Whitman students are so drawn to the program.

Whitman cracks list of top contributors to Teach for America

Whitman's recently graduated class of 2012 is the 16th top contributor in the small schools category to the Teach for America program, sending 12 students. Teach for America, a growing nonprofit program of about 33,000 members, takes employees, teachers and college graduates and places them into schools in low-income communities around the country. Each employee of the program works as a full-time teacher in their school district.

Whitties still possess missionary spirit

We are missionaries, but in a sense different from the Protestant wagon-train variety of the mid-19th century. "Critical thinking" is our new religion; "helping people" is still our mission.
