The Seattle Mariners are beginning the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) season against the Athletics at T-Mobile Park. Owners of the best Opening Day record in the league since 2005, the Mariners look to continue their opening game success and return to the playoffs after a two-season hiatus, which would mark their second postseason appearance since 2001. 

The Mariners will open the season under manager Dan Wilson, who spent 12 years (1994-2005) with the organization as a player. Wilson took over the position following the team’s split with Scott Servais in August 2024. 

Following the managerial change, the Mariners finished the 2024 season with a 21-13 record. To improve a struggling offense, Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez was appointed as hitting coach and made an immediate impact. Prior to Martinez’s involvement, the team was 27th in runs scored and 28th in on-base plus slugging (OPS). Following his appointment, the Mariners jumped to 6th in runs scored and 4th in OPS.

While the Mariners’ hitting certainly struggled last season, the strength of the pitching core was never in doubt. Both Logan Gilbert and Andrés Muñoz made the 2024 All-Star roster and George Kirby pitched 191 innings, the 9th most in the league.

Looking to carry the team’s recent pitching success into this season, Wilson has chosen Gilbert as the starting pitcher for the season opener. Gilbert led the MLB in innings pitched last season with 208.2. Despite this, he had the 14th lowest earned run average (ERA) with 3.23, or 3.23 runs on average per nine innings pitched. Gilbert’s recent pitching form could spell out success for the Mariners on Opening Night. 

Former Mariners right fielder and 2025 Hall of Fame inductee, Ichiro Suzuki, will throw the ceremonial first pitch. Game start is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
