The time has come again: for hitting, dunking and throwing in the world of intramural sports. This winter and spring, though, things are going to be a little different than in the past. Due to the renovation of Sherwood, IM sports will not be played inside this season, which has led to many changes in the schedule.
“The lack of gym space meant we had to move basketball to after spring break during the good weather. All our other sports in the spring semester such as tennis, softball, and volleyball need warmer weather to be played. We would have liked to place frisbee after spring break but that would have meant too many sports after break and almost none before spring break,” said IM Committee member Nick Littman in an e-mail.
During the colder weather before spring break, students will have the opportunity to participate in IM Ultimate Frisbee, frisbee golf and bowling.
This change in the timing of Ultimate Frisbee means that students will have to play in worse weather than they would in the spring. However, the hope of the IM Committee is that students will put on an extra layer or two and still enjoy the sport.
Frisbee golf is new to IM sports this year and will be played with teams of three and one alternate player, ensuring that all games will be played.
Each week teams will be matched up with two competing teams, and will jointly decide when to compete: morning or afternoon, weekday or weekend. The purpose of having two teams play at once is to hold each other accountable for scoring, which the captains will report. At the end of the season, the team with the lowest net scores will win a shirt and honor associated with victory.
The established course will avoid the Sherwood renovations. Games start on Mon. Feb 9; a detailed set of rules will be available then. Club frisbee players will be able to enjoy frolfing without limitations.
“Frolf is such a popular sport already on this campus and I think people are excited about the chance to have it in the format of an official tournament. Due to construction, we had to come up with a new course which was designed with input from members of the frisbee team,” said Littman.
After Spring Break, in hopes of nicer weather, students can participate in outdoor basketball, softball, tennis and volleyball.
Basketball will be played half-court at Anderson Hall, North Hall and the Phi house. Teams will be 3v3 or 4v4 depending on student preference. Basketball is normally played in Sherwood; this will continue next year. Again the hope is that students will be excited to participate, and will chose to play and have fun despite the change in location.
If enough teams register, 6v6 Volleyball will be offered outside the science building, North Hall and Anderson Hall.
Dodge Ball will not be happening this year, but will return in the fall.
“Next year the format of IM sports will be back to normal with Sherwood’s completion and we hope IM players can be flexible with this year’s different circumstances,” said Littman.
