President Sarah Bolton addressed concerns and questions surrounding the new private security detail at Memorial Hall in a campus-wide email sent Wednesday morning.
The email, titled “Security at Memorial Last Night,” states “yesterday, [Security First] was asked to provide a security officer to help the on-duty Whitman Security staff. The sole role the staff from the outside company were instructed to undertake was to watch Mem and call Whitman Campus Security if they observed vandalism or other concerns taking place.”

Bolton also clarified that chalking on and around the steps of Mem is not considered vandalism. Last night, however, when the only actions taking place by student protesters was chalking, Whitman Security Officers demanded student ID’s and recorded students with their devices. It is unclear why security took these measures in light of Bolton’s email.
Bolton’s email did not address whether the private security force carried weapons. As The Wire reported, a guard stationed at Mem had what appeared to be a weapon holstered on his hip. When asked, the guard declined to comment on what the object holstered on his hip was.

In the email, Bolton apologized for “bringing in this contract company to assist without communicating about it to the campus in advance, and for the fear that the unexpected presence of outside security may have caused to members of our community.”

Carry on protesters! Gaza continues to suffer, along with the West Bank. They need a voice and there’s no-one speaking for them in Washington.

The chalk IS vandalism. It costs money and resources to clean up, and further money and resources to prevent from occurring again. It does not create a means for constructive conversation about issues (the goal of a liberal arts college), as opposed to intolerance for other viewpoints and an inability to discus and come to reasonable understanding and compromise. It’s an act that shows the mindset of a core group of students that is anathema to creating a thriving community – and it is an act of violence. Speak up against it as a student, and see what happens! Ostracism, heckling, harassment, possible assault (all “justified,” of course, because those who think they are morally superior can justify any action in the name of their ideology – those with other viewpoints are “evil!”). A sad day for my former college.
Whitman needs to reclaim its name and standards in the name of classical liberal arts. Will it be difficult? Yes! Most certainly! Some student may even leave. But the alternative? Dwindling stature and applications (and quality of applications). How many prospective students are acts like this (or the occupation of Memorial or the mass marches and support of ultra-leftist and anti-semitic causes and ideas) turning away? I can say that my children are spending their $400-$500K each on other, more balanced liberal arts colleges. Whitman – that’s lost revenue and lost balanced culture you could have had. How many more are there? Time to choose…. one path leads to fulfilled students brimming with excitement in a heady cauldron of heterodox ideas, freely shared, the other… Mills, Antioch, Concordia, Multnomah, Cornish, etc., etc.
