While most every ski or snowboard bum in the Northwest has heard of the region’s most popular mountains: Whistler and Hood, for example: few know of nearby Bluewood, the most accessible ski resort for Whitman Students.
Nestled in the Blue Mountains about 20 miles from the nearby town of Dayton, Bluewood is just over an hour away from Whitman campus, making it a popular excursion for students on weekends or on days when they get out of class early.
The resort is a modest one, with only two lifts serving intermediate visitors and a rope pull for a bunny hill. The price, however, is reasonable for students, who with their discount can get a full day of skiing in for $34. While skiing might not be affordable on an everyday basis, a full day with your friends on the slopes might be worth a splurge.
And a small mountain doesn’t necessarily make for worse skiing or boarding. “Bluewood is a small mountain, but because we’re on the east side, it gets great snow,” said senior Noah Koerper, who is currently teaching snowboarding for his second season at Bluewood.
“There’s a great vibe over there, and it’s a small and friendly staff,” said Koerper. “People recognize each other, and it makes for a great community.”
There are still plenty of opportunities to rent some skis or a board from the OP and head up to the mountain. It is open until Apr. 1, and on closing day there is the annual event called “The Bash.”
“Last year it snowed the night before the Bash,” said Koerper. “It’s been an early spring, so it might not happen this year, but you never know.”
