Student hit by car while crossing Isaacs

A Whitman student was hit by a sport utility vehicle while using the pedestrian crosswalk on Isaacs Ave. shortly before 11 a.m. on Monday, April 16. The student, senior Stephen Stradley, was taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries following the incident. Dean of Students Chuck Cleveland said that a full recovery was expected.

About 205 admitted students, along with 200 of their parents, got a taste of life at Whitman during Admitted Students� Day on Saturday, April 14. The day included such activities as sample classes, a mock Humans vs. Zombies mission, a tour of residence halls and an opportunity to learn about programs such as community service and off-campus studies.

Musical Whitties find fresh avenues for expression through Walla Walla Symphony

Whitman students seeking a large-scale professional ensemble experience have risen to the challenges and rewards of playing with the Walla Walla Symphony. The 104-year old orchestra performs at Whitman's Cordiner Hall and has long drawn on some of the college's own students, including current seniors Robin Miller and Rebecca Young and first-year Ryan Jacobsen.

SOS Clinic construction expands uninsured care

When the new facility for the SOS Medical Clinic opens, it will provide a much-needed expansion of uninsured health care services in Walla Walla. The larger facility, with a new adjacent dental clinic, is tentatively scheduled to open in early to mid summer of this year.

Hot poop scoop: Inside the oldest indie record store in Washington state

On first stepping inside Hot Poop, Washington's oldest independently owned record store, one is immediately overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff compacted into the small shop. Shelves upon shelves covered with semi-organized CDs and DVDs line the thin walkways. Band posters, banners and guitars of all shapes, sizes, colors and designs cram the walls. Elvis and Johnny Cash echo from the store's speakers, and old music videos from various bands play on an assortment of television sets scattered throughout the crammed space. A giant bowl of Doritos sits on the counter, and the entire store smells of incense.

Inland Octopus mural discussion continues

It's been more than a year since the large colorful Octopus mural was painted in front of the Inland Octopus toy store. As of this week, the fines against the mural that have been accruing at $100 a day since October 14, 2010, will exceed $35,000. Currently the store's owner, Bob Catsiff, and the city are waiting to take the mural case to state Supreme Court, bypassing the appeals court because of the case's constitutional nature. It will be about year before the case is reviewed by the state Supreme Court.
