Students win awards for civil rights education

Seniors Shannon Morrissey, Libby Watkins and Alyssa Fairbanks, along with Assistant Dean for Student Engagement Noah Leavitt traveled to the Office of Civil Rights in Seattle on March 21 to give a presentation about their experiences teaching about the civil rights movement in Walla Walla Public Schools with the Whitman Teaches the Movement initiative. The three were also recognized with Civil Rights Education Hero Awards.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, “An internship is a legitimate learning experience benefiting the student and not simply an operational work experience that just happens to be conducted by a student." This is the standard to which Whitman adheres to when supporting student internships and considering which ones to fund through the Whitman Internship Grant.

With one-on-one advising, the Student Engagement Center (SEC) helps Whitman students throughout their lives to find community service opportunities, internships and careers that align with their specific interests and values.

Whitties weigh options at grad school fair

Representatives from over 30 graduate schools gathered in Reid Ballroom on Oct. 6 for Whitman's annual graduate school fair, an event designed to educate students about their post-graduation options. A stream of students filtered in and out of the room throughout the afternoon, perusing the information laid out on tables and chatting with representatives from schools around the Northwest, and beyond.

Virtual Career and Internship Fair hopes for success

The Student Engagement Center launches its first Virtual Career and Internship Fair. The new format, a change from the previous fair that invited employers from across the region, is in response to a decreasing number of employers willing to come to Walla Walla and students' increased use of the internet.
