There are moments in life that can capture the true nature of a man’s soul. This underpaid reporter experienced one such moment last week. Gazing down upon the plebeian horde below him from his secret office in the Clocktower of the Memorial Building, Whitman College President Jorge Ponts said one word to this underfed reporter before he descended and made his annual “Kick off the Year" speech on the steps of the Memorial Building: “Sheep.â€

For the first time in memorable history, the entire student body will vote directly on two petitions in a legislative election. The first petition in the election, taking place Thursday, May 8, will determine student support for a resolution calling for a student on the Board of Trustees as a voting member.
Graduation is coming just around the corner and the senior friends I've watched write theses and study for oral exams will be walking across the stage and bidding farewell to the place they've studied for the last four years. All of the late nights, early mornings, stress and hard work has finally proven to be worth it when each graduate walks away with a degree in hand. The smiles and tears of happiness from family members and friends will fill the atmosphere with happiness and positivity for most, but not all on May 25.
Whitman College’s 44th annual Renaissance Faire will take place this Saturday, Apr. 26 and will last from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the lawn in front of Memorial Hall.
Last week the Communications Office announced that Sally Jewell has been selected as this year’s commencement speaker. Jewell, United States Secretary of the Interior and former CEO of R.E.I., will address commencement attendees on May 25th.

Performances of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet were held March 5th to 9th in Harper Joy Theatre (HJT) as part of the collaboration between Whitman’s Theatre Department and the Encounters faculty. This is the second year HJT has incorporated a performance of one of the texts in the Encounters syllabus.
