Not all the turkey you devoured, not the fights you enjoyed with your extended family and not even the shenanigans you got up to with your friends at home. Nope, I’m here to talk about retail’s favorite day of the year: Black Friday.
In response to the failing grade Washington state received for its civil rights education standards, Whitman College created the program Whitman Teaches the Movement (WTTM) two years ago to supplement Walla Walla Public Schools' lack of civil rights education. Now entering its third year, WTTM is undergoing several changes that seek to expand and streamline the program.
With all of the media attention that has been brought upon the Miami Dolphins over the course of the past few weeks, it would give the impression that athletic locker rooms are full of misguided thugs. However, it appears that either by selection or the culture of Whitman, the school doesn't seem to have any type of serious conflict on their sports teams.

Do you ever think about what you would say if a BBC news anchor interviewed you? Every summer Whitman Direct Action (WDA) travels to Guatemala to research economic development and humanitarian aid, but this tradition may soon come to an end. Ambivalence from members of the ASWC Finance Committee left WDA questioning whether they can count on any support and wondering how to fund this year’s trip to Guatemala without it.
Walla Walla currently lacks a public pool facility; a committee titled Rebuild Memorial Pool is attempting to change that with a cost effective plan to restore an old pubic pool that was shut down in 2006.
Those readers I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting in person should know that I proudly represent St. Paul, Minn. To those who don’t care, I hope you’ll forgive me for discussing a topic that’s quite literally close to home for me. A debate in the city council of St. Paul's twin city, Minneapolis, caught my attention this week: three city council members made a proposal to equip police officers with body cameras. The proposed measure is still in its infancy, but it’s not a bad idea. The police force in Minneapolis, of course, is wary of the idea, but it may benefit them more than they let on. Cameras would have a positive influence on police work for the police as well as the people they apprehend.
Whitman alumnus Sam Alden '12 has been up to a lot lately. Recently named one of the "Best American Comics 2013" and writing a graphic novel, The Pioneer catches up with Alden to discuss his recent successes.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the meat industry emits more greenhouse gases than the whole transportation sector combined. That’s right, all fossil fuels burned by cars, trucks, buses, trains, boats and planes emit fewer greenhouse gases than raising animals for food. 18 percent of our emissions are attributed to meat production, while only 13 percent are attributed to transportation. Emptying your wallet for a new hybrid may have less of an impact on the earth’s atmosphere than altering your diet.
Whitman's All Students for Consent club won the Consent Revolution Awards, put on by awareness and anti-rape media outlet Force. ASC was featured in prominent publications, including the Huffington Post and Bitch Magazine, for their recent win and their "Ask for It" Campaign.
