Greeks take varied approaches to service

Philanthropy in Whitman's Greek organizations runs the gamut from Mr. Whitman, to stream restoration and dog walking with the local animal shelter. Greek groups participate in philanthropy as a way to work together and give back to the community, and the group dynamic of Greek organizations motivates sorority and fraternity members to turn up and fill a need they see in the community.

Nationwide, male college students volunteer within their respective communities in disproportionately low rates compared to their female peers, according to a recent article written in the Chronicle of Higher Education. This trend has also become apparent in the Whitman community over the past decade.

Short-term disability policy “step in right direction”

This year, a short-term disability policy was added to the faculty handbook. This policy, which can be used as a maternity leave policy, was created to address the physical hardships faced by mothers who have just given birth, was crafted by the 2008 Faculty Fringe Benefits Committee.

Whitties with learning disabilities mentor elementary school students through art

Project Eye-to-Eye, a national organization that facilitates mentorship between adults and elementary school students with learning disabilities, is new to Whitman this fall. In the program, Whitties with learning disabilities are mentoring local fourth and fifth grade students with similar learning disabilities by creating art together.
