“100HappyDays” program pro positive mental health

The Whitman Well, a new initiative from the counseling center, encourages Whitman students, staff and faculty to “take in the good” for 100 days. Assistant Director of the Counseling Center, Tracee Anderson, in collaboration with an organization called 100HappyDays, has created a website where members of the Whitman community can sign up to post one photo a day of something that makes them feel good.

Economic diversity conversation continues

Discussion about socioeconomic diversity and college affordability is still simmering in the Whitman community after a New York Times' article published last Monday ranked Whitman last in economic diversity on a list of top U.S. colleges. President George Bridges and the Board of Trustees have released separate statements to students, faculty and alumni addressing the situation, while student groups are mobilizing to protest Whitman's lack of diversity over alumni weekend.

Improved collaboration and identification of the loose roles of Campus Security and the Walla Walla Police Department in the past few years have helped make these organizations more effective, with Campus Security being the first to respond to incidents on campus and police arriving if they receive a complaint.

Safety comes first, but policies remain unclear for alcohol, marijuana

Whitman maintains strict policies against marijuana out of concern that the federal government may cut off essential financial aid and other funding should the college be found in violation of the federal law. Despite the law and official policy, students frequently use both marijuana and alcohol at Whitman and nationwide. In response to this reality, the college quietly tries to promote safety-oriented approaches to enforcement. However, the aspects of Whitman’s policies which promote safety are often not openly endorsed by the college.

Support group helps students live with addiction

Sober at Whitman, a support group for Whitman community members struggling with addiction, recently began its second year on campus. Alcohol is the primary focus of Sober at Whitman, but the group is not intended to be exclusionary. It serves anyone with addictive relationships to alcohol or drugs.

Underage use of alcohol is an open secret. Instead of trying to criminalize or stigmatize drinking, many colleges, including Whitman, work to make sure that if students choose to drink, they can do so in a safe and responsible manner and can have access to help without the fear of repercussions.

The term "Post-Rural" originated 14 years ago when original curator Matt Hamon was mocking the concept of postmodernism with his friends. The term became a way to examine the relationship between the two spaces and explore the way in which people interact with landscape. With this new exhibition, old contributors are addressing the topic with a finer viewpoint new contributors are adding their own experiences to the mix.
