Prior to my freshman year at Whitman, I had never done any running. Even three-mile runs seemed like an unfeasible distance. The idea of running a marathon was simply crazy. But last month I ran the full, 26.2-mile Portland Marathon.

This is the standard to which Whitman adheres to when supporting student internships and considering which ones to fund through the Whitman Internship Grant.

Number of Whitman students misrepresented in college materials

Though a discrepancy between the enrollment number listed in the course catalog and admissions brochures and that in the factbook seems strange, the explanation might actually be very simple: printing costs and changing numbers make it much easier to print a simplified average than an exact number.

Whitman in the Wallowas gives students hands-on experience with environmental issues

This summer, 12 environmental studies students are going on a mini semester-in-the-west-inspired excursion. Whitman in the Wallowas, a new six-week-long summer program, gives students the opportunity to learn about the ecology of the northwest and to work with the Wallowa Resource Council on environmental issues.

Many departments lack open courses for incoming fall students

Upperclassmen have completed preregistration for Fall 2011 semester, leaving many introductory-level courses completely filled with no space for first-year students. Departments including politics, philosophy, sociology, and psychology are struggling to find space for incoming first-years. Meanwhile, the administration plans to solve the problem by increasing class sizes or creating more classes, which will most likely be taught by visiting professors.
