Senior Matthew Morriss has done things in the past six months most Whitman students only dream of. Not only is he spending time climbing and skiing in some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the region, but he isn't paying to do it, either.
When senior Nick Marquiss sat down at his first Encounters class, he found himself sitting across the table from the same professor who taught his father decades before.
A new fund was created this year in the name of Professor of Geology Bob Carson to boost the Outdoor Program. The fund's stated goal is to allow students who wouldn’t usually go on outdoor trips to experience education outside of the classroom. Starting this year, each incoming student is granted $150, which they can freely spend on OP trips.

"[In my thesis] we looked at channels on one of the largest volcanoes on Mars, Ascraeus Mons and we tried to figure out if these channels are formed by flowing water or lava."
Visiting Assisting Professor of Environmental Studies & Geology Ellen Bishop's upcoming book "Field Guide to the Pacific North West Geology" will be published in 2013. In it, Bishop intends to tell the stories and histories of the land surrounding Whitman.
A Walla Walla community member, Ben Workman, donated a Hadrosaur fossil this past summer and is currently on display in the atrium of the Science building.
