Financial Aid’s History: How Whitman Continues to Privilege Wealthy Applicants

Under its current financial aid policies, Whitman can reject applicants based on their family’s lack of wealth. But this is a relatively recent shift. The college became “need-sensitive” for the first time in 2009, and from 1986 to 1991, it also meet 100 percent of students’ financial need.

While Whitman's aid process works for most people, as evidenced by the relatively low average debt with which students leave, it does not work for all. Unusual family circumstances can result in students' aid being cut during their later years in college, when it is more difficult to transfer both emotionally and academically.

Growing tuition outpaces family income

Whitman College recently released its student fees for the 2012-2013 academic year. Tuition for next year is set at $41,790, a four percent increase from last year, and is the lowest tuition increase the college has had since 2000. Despite this lower-than-average tuition increase, questions regarding the sustainability of the higher education model that have persisted for years now continues to be asked today.

Students unsure about new loan plan

President Obama's new plan to ease the burden of student loans may give some hope to eligible Whitman students and thousands of other indebted college students nationwide. The plan will go into effect in January 2012, lowering monthly payments and allowing students to consolidate their federal loans.

Admissions switch to need-sensitive provokes concerns

Recently, students have been raising concerns regarding the switch in the admissions policy from need-blind to need-sensitive admission. At an ASWC town hall meeting Oct. 24 and in comments since then, students have discussed the policy, especially in terms of its effect on the diversity and the makeup of campus.

Money a secondary concern when applying to be an RA

This year, 75 students applied to be RAs, a higher number than the usual 60-65 applicants. Resident Assistants get free room and board, but most students don't seem to be applying for the position primarily for the financial benefits.

The Whitman Financial Aid Office prides itself on striving to provide access to a wide group of students. Unfortunately, a number of students are missing from campus this year due to increasing tuition costs and decreasing financial aid.
