During their April 12 Senate meeting, ASWC passed a resolution calling for content or trigger warnings in the future Encounters syllabus. The resolution, which will require faculty approval in order to be implemented, was created in the hopes of preparing students for engagement in particularly difficult materials.
There should not be such significant disparity in the difficulties of various classes. Professors should compare both curricula and grading rubrics in order to make the system fair for all students involved.

Performances of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet were held March 5th to 9th in Harper Joy Theatre (HJT) as part of the collaboration between Whitman’s Theatre Department and the Encounters faculty. This is the second year HJT has incorporated a performance of one of the texts in the Encounters syllabus.
No matter what they learned as children or what their parents told them, data shows that the vast majority of students are still judging books by their covers.

Have you ever had a question that you didn't feel comfortable asking anybody? Well, I know that myself and many other Whitman students have. Luckily at Whitman, there is such a place that you can do this, and it is on a website called Whitman Encounters. However, this outlet to freely speak your mind might not be around for much longer.
The Encounters class syllabus changes frequently from year to year, depending on the whims of the professors. However, students have no direct input on the changes. This year, a few texts have been swapped out for different ones.
After listening to a speech by founder of the 350.org organization Bill McKibben, over 200 members of the Whitman community marched around campus chanting slogans in favor of divesting the college's endowment from fossil fuels. The largest event held so far by Whitman’s divestment movement, the march energized supporters of the movement and built upon momentum the movement has built over the semester.
