‘Jane the Virgin’ steps in right direction

Aleida Fernandez February 19, 2015
Growing up, I realized that Latina women were also typecast in almost oppressively one-dimensional stereotypes on television. Look at Eva Longoria who portrayed a conniving Latina homemaker who used her looks to advance her agenda in "Desperate Housewives." Or look at Sofia Vergara who plays the overly emotional, overly loud and overly crazy Gloria on "Modern Family." Turn on Lifetime’s "Devious Maids" for 10 minutes to see the silent-but-sexualized maid trope. Even Santana on "Glee," Fox’s hour-long PSA against harmful stereotypes, falls victim to these cliches.

How do college students perceive "culture"? How do we make the transition to the "adult world"? Sam Adler asks Whitties to explain it all.

Tattoo culture proves colorful topic on campus

Clara Bartlett March 11, 2012
It’s easy to forget that tattoos were once taboo in mainstream society, confined to fringe elements like sailors and street gangs. Nowadays, teen idols casually flaunt their latest ink in exotic languages, and everyone from Angelina Jolie to the British Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron, has been known to go under the needle. Is the tattoo truly a thing of the past? The Pioneer investigated Whitties’ true feelings on tattoo culture.

Festivals do not define who we are

Peter Chen November 10, 2011
Undoubtedly, lots of people celebrate festivals. Festivals not only present culture, but also cause economic boosts in modern society. Before I came to Whitman, I was told to book the airline tickets right after I got my visa because they would get expensive during Christmas; a few days before Valentine's Day, some of my male friends always start to buy roses and try to keep them fresh because roses cost ten times more on that day. However, what if they do not buy a bunch of roses for their girlfriends on that day? Does it mean they do not love them enough?
