Ambre Energy's proposed coal processing facility in nearby Boardman, Ore. poses serious risks not only to the global climate, but to our own health and well-being here in the Northwest. Thankfully, there is much we can do, even as busy Whitties, to help put it to a stop.

When people think of China, one of the things that pops into one's head is communism. In America, there is uneasiness when we hear the word communism. Though the feeling is not as pronounced as in the Cold War Era, it still exists in trace amounts.

Only-child stereotypes do not apply—especially in China

Besides questions about the independence of Tibet and Taiwan, the "only child question" ranks the third on the list of the questions I have been asked as an international student from China: Are you an only child? Do all Chinese families have one child? Will families get fined if they have more than one child? I have also gotten lots of “wows" when I tell people I am indeed the only child in my family.

This summer I was part of a group of 13 Whitman students who spent six weeks in China, led by Professor of Anthropology Charles McKhann and Adjunct Instructor of Chinese Wencui Zhao. The main goal of the trip was to give our group the opportunity to study Chinese.
