International students come to Whitman knowing they will be in a place where very few people share their background and experiences. Though nearly all international students end up staying at the college for their whole undergraduate career, there’s no escaping the fact that Whitman is a small college with a a small international community in a remote, rural town.

For many first-years, the day acceptances arrived was marked by excitement and eagerness for something new. As students looked through the cream-colored folders and learned more about the school they would eventually attend, many wanted to see the more personal side of Whitman: the people with whom they would be sharing their four years. The Whitman College Class of 2016 Facebook page is where hundreds of incoming students ended up, learning more about the school and each other.

About 205 admitted students, along with 200 of their parents, got a taste of life at Whitman during Admitted Students� Day on Saturday, April 14. The day included such activities as sample classes, a mock Humans vs. Zombies mission, a tour of residence halls and an opportunity to learn about programs such as community service and off-campus studies.

Admissions switch to need-sensitive provokes concerns

Recently, students have been raising concerns regarding the switch in the admissions policy from need-blind to need-sensitive admission. At an ASWC town hall meeting Oct. 24 and in comments since then, students have discussed the policy, especially in terms of its effect on the diversity and the makeup of campus.
