Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor April 16, 2009

EDITOR, I find this article to be in bad taste and hold little merit. Janyk believes the Peace Corps was developed as an instrument of American imperialism, equating volunteers to brainwashing missionaries...

Support for yet another auto industry bailout

Bryant Fong April 16, 2009

The auto industry is asking the federal government for yet another bailout. Many believe that only GM and Chrysler should be granted the funds because Ford can use their savings to wade through the tough...

Board Editorial: Student input ignored in making cuts

April 16, 2009

As the administration confronts the consequences of a tightening economy and shrinking endowment, it has had to significantly cut costs. These cuts have included decisions to postpone the search for a...

Would-be student artists denied workspace

William Lawrence April 16, 2009
It's prospie time on campus, which means scores of bored high schoolers and their terrified parents are making the rounds on tours. A highlight of each tour is the new Fouts Center for Visual Arts—its shininess alone is surely a draw even for the most artistically inept student. Unfortunately, many Whitties have found themselves unfairly deprived of the right to use this $14.2 million space which we all pay for with our tuition. The powers that be have decided that only students enrolled in art classes should be allowed to use the building.

‘Socialism’ made cool again

Russ Caditz-Peck April 16, 2009

Apparently President Obama: coupled with our imploding financial system: has the ability to make even America's dirtiest word cool again. Last week's Rasmussen Reports national survey found that of...

Proposed federal loan reform merits scrutiny

G.L.S. April 16, 2009

It's unclear whether Obama's latest proposal to reform the federal college loan system is bold and progressive or just plain idealistic and shortsighted. Currently private lenders facilitate federal...

It’s Ridiculous: In defense of Bon Appétit

Derek Thurber April 16, 2009

All too often I hear from Whitman students how much they hate Bon Appétit. How they hate this or that, wish something was better or just want a change. I think this is ridiculous. I don't think Bon...

Board Editorial: A letter to the bomb-threat sender

April 9, 2009

To the person who sent the bomb threat: In officially declaring your April 1 threat on Hunter Conservatory a hoax, Dean of Students Chuck Cleveland called it terribly inappropriate.   He couldn't have...

Kyoto Protocol will not serve U.S. well

Bryant Fong April 9, 2009

Just last week, the G8 met and one of their main concerns was the renewal of the Kyoto protocol, that began in 2005 and is set to expire in 2012. The new version is scheduled to be drafted at a meeting...

‘What makes great music: Part II’

Jesus Vasquez April 9, 2009

I should first clarify what I mean by great music. It should be truly inspiring, uplifting music that truly holds you captive: not the kind of music you can work to, or something that you greet passively;...

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor April 9, 2009

EDITOR, I recently read your article on gender-neutral bathrooms and thought I would chime in on the issue. It seems to me that the Whitman community often looks at these situations from the wrong end....

Status symbols missing what makes them symbols

Lisa Curtis and Alex Kerr April 9, 2009

In preparation for drag fest, Lisa decided to raid Alex's closet. While sorting through rotten towers of laundry she found a Ralph Lauren polo shirt. Holding it up, she teased Alex for buying into cultural...
