ASWC town hall draws student input

Senior Will Canine, student advocacy chair for ASWC, could not have been happier. “That's student input right there," he said as he held up a stack of responses to the Whitman policies that were discussed at the ASWC Town Hall last Thursday, Oct. 22. A “ballot" was offered to the more than 50 people who attended the ASWC Town Hall meeting, asking them to give their input on everything that was discussed. The topics put forward for students to consider were the GoPrint system, the Alternative Voices requirement and a discussion of Whitman's plagiarism policy.

Alinsky symposium sparks topics of community organizing, activism

Someone walking by Reid on Friday, Oct. 16 easily could have been convinced that the Whitman bubble is just a myth. Over 100 community members, faculty and Whitman students gathered there during lunch to participate in a discussion about community organizing in Walla Walla. The talk, which featured a panel of three community organizers from Eastern Washington, was part of a three-day symposium hosted by Whitman's Sociology Department.

Volunteers make Apple Harvest Festival a success

Children who flocked to the Children's Museum of Walla Walla with their families for the Apple Harvest Festival the evening of Saturday, Oct. 10, were able to enjoy a carnival-style array of festivities, with the help of volunteers from organizations including AmeriCorps and Whitman's Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

A trip to Tibet led Phil Borges to create the book “Tibetan Portrait: The Power of Compassion" and begin documenting indigenous populations. Thirteen years later he has lived with indigenous cultures around the world, hosted Discovery and National Geographic documentaries, created feature photography exhibits and written award-winning books. His latest activity? Speaking at Whitman Oct. 1.

Proposed Walla Walla Valley Transit cuts meet resistance

If you go shopping in Walla Walla and spend $10 on clothes, 3 cents of the tax you pay will go towards the Valley Transit System. That may not sound like much, but sales tax makes up 65% of the transit system's budget--and due to the recession, those tax revenues have decreased dramatically.
