The Food Pantry of Walla Walla is tucked into the basement of the First Presbyterian Church on First Avenue and Poplar Street. This modest facility, taking up only two rooms of the church, is run by an equally modest volunteer community that works together to provide food for those in need. Tom Galloway, the food bank’s manager, speaks below an impressively groomed mustache in a slow and calculated drawl, listing his duties and his history in the food management business.

Bon Appétit employees work long hours in difficult and fast-paced jobs. When injuries occur, they cannot use the Whitman Health Center, and their vacation days and break times are small in number. Though Bon Appétit employees on campus generally have good relationships with higher-up campus officials, nationally the catering company is re-classifying many employees' employment statuses to save money, affecting health insurance for many of them.

Horizon/Alaska Air of the Walla Walla airport changed its cutoff time for checking into a flight from 30 minutes to 40 minutes, specifically targeting passengers without checked baggage. It prompted Brian Dohe to send a notice to campus in hopes of avoiding frustration in the impending holiday season.

Louis Perry, Whitman’s eighth president, passed away at age 95 in Washington Odd Fellow’s Home on Sept. 8, 2013. During his time as president, Perry greatly increased the college's asset base and endowment. His legacy lives on in the form of the the Louis B. Perry Summer Student-Faculty Research Endowment, as well as other significant community projects.

For the past few weeks, several “Big Idea Talks” posters have been covering the campus grounds, advertising a first-time collaboration between the Walla Walla Public Library and Whitman faculty to give a series of locally-themed lectures open to the public. The talks, given by faculty members such as Senior Lecturer of Environmental Humanities/General Studies Don Snow and Grace Farnsworth Phillips Professor of Geology and Environmental Studies Bob Carson, focus on the theme of what needs to be done in the future to keep Walla Walla a wonderful place to live.
