This month, the Counseling Center decided to go through with hiring a new counselor in accordance with an ASWC resolution passed last semester. The addition of another counselor is a response to the increasing demand and sometimes limited availability of counseling services on campus.

Whitman’s All-American Honorable Mention swimmer Claire Collins has every right to brag about her record breaking accolades, but when it comes to her success, Collins offers nothing but modesty. Collins, who took first place in the 200 breaststroke in the NWC Championship last week, is currently waiting to hear if she will have another chance to compete at Nationals for the second year in a row.

The Power and Privilege Symposium held on Thursday, Feb. 20 was one of the most well-attended events at Whitman in recent memory. The majority of the Whitman community spent the day engaging in dialogue about issues of power, privilege and identity, as the faculty cancelled classes to ensure that all students had time to attend. While the symposium was extremely successful, activists hope to continue the dialogue it began in the weeks and months ahead.

Whitman students rejoiced in the recent snow flurries, using the white tundra of Ankney as a field for snowball fights and building snowmen. While the near foot of snow brought fun and games, Whitman’s Nordic Ski Team used it as a rare opportunity to get practice runs in around Ankney as they prepare for Division 3 Nationals in Lake Placid, New York.

During freezing temperatures earlier this winter, volunteers and community leaders converted the First Congregational Church into an emergency warming center for the city’s homeless. In Conner Merten’s hometown of Kennewick, Washington, it was not uncommon for him to hear his athletic teammates, coaches or fans say things such as “you suck dick” or “fag.” However, following his winter break from Williamette this year, after years of confusion, self-resentment and acting what his community perceived to be as “normal,” Conner publicly announced that he was bisexual and had a boyfriend, becoming the first active football athlete to come out as bisexual at any level.
