Sophomore Gia Anastasiou and first-year Julia Bowman were walking down Boyer Avenue toward Reid at 8 p.m. on Oct. 17 when, practically out of nowhere, a man on a bike bumped into them and pulled Anastasiou's purse from her hand. The pair chased after the thief but couldn't keep up. Anastasiou called the police, who arrived within minutes, but they have yet to recover her purse or any of its contents.

Riding shotgun: On patrol with the Walla Walla police

Hadley Jolley October 29, 2009
I was shocked and scared when I first noticed the two rifles sitting next to me in the police cruiser. That was the closest I'd ever been to a gun, especially an assault rifle, and there two were leaning upright against the glass that separates the back of the police car, where people who get arrested ride, and the front. I could rub my shoulders against them.

More recently, she's written wine columns for the Union Bulletin, served as a judge in wine competitions and written for Tourism Walla Walla. She currently maintains her online store, Wild Walla Walla Wine Woman.

Whitman from a first-year’s parent’s perspective

Hadley Jolley October 22, 2009
Upon my arrival at Whitman, the first thing one of the RAs in the Prentiss Hall lounge said after I picked up my room key was, “I had that room! It's tiny!" Yes, compared to other Prentiss rooms, my room was particularly tiny. So tiny that we had to carry some of what I brought to campus back to the car and take it home. When a man saw my father carrying a few boxes back to the car, he said, “So you over-packed?" “No. We were under-roomed," my dad, Michael Jolley, said.

Family dining in downtown Walla Walla

kristencoverdale October 22, 2009
Gathering for dinner is an important ritual for many families. Eating together is a time to unwind and reconnect after school or work. For those with overwhelmingly full schedules, family dinner might be the only time each day that everyone can sit down together. For the newest members of the Whitman community, Family Weekend will be first time most of them have seen their parents or siblings since the semester began. First-year Kelly Peterson expressed her anticipation. “I'm really excited my parents are coming this weekend. I miss being able to hear about everyone's day, family dinner is so important to me . . . We're all going out to dinner!"
