Singled Out: Is profiling a problem on campus?

Last fall, a student alleged that a Whitman security officer racially profiled him in a tense encounter on campus. Now, administrators and concerned community members are divided on how to identify and deal with profiling on campus.

Sigma Chi-hosted Greek Life discussion focuses on sexual assault

Whitman fraternity, Sigma Chi held an open forum on Greek Life in Olin Hall on Tuesday night. The event, intended originally as a panel-based discussion touching on a variety of issues facing the Greek community, shifted due to low turnout to a largely crowd-sourced discussion focused predominantly on issues of sexual assault prevention and prosecution.

Office of Admission breaks record for applications for second year in row

For a second year in a row, Whitman has received a record number of applications for admission or transferring to the college. Much of the growth is due to an increase in international applications.

Tuition, salary increases chosen for 2015-16

February’s Governing Board meetings resulted in the approval of a new budget for the 2015-16 academic year, which includes a three percent tuition increase along with salary increases of 3.5 percent for staff and three percent for faculty. The tuition increase is similar to the 2.9 percent increase in tuition made last year and reflects the goal of the college to remain competitive with similar institutions.

2015 marks the third year of the Breaking Ground Monologues organized by the student group Feminists Advocating for Change and Empowerment (FACE). The monologues are a time for Whitman students, staff, faculty and alumni to record and share their stories, as well as an opportunity for other members of the community to listen and connect with their experiences.

Applications closed this week for the Ben Rabinowitz Campus Improvement Award, granted to students for use on charitable projects of their own devising. The SEC, which collects applications for submission to the Deans’ Council, reported the submission of 5 applications before the deadline at 4:00 p.m. on March 2-- a high over the past 4 years.

Missionary mascots hold tenuous place in college’s culture

Though never formally adopted by the college, the Missionaries have been the school’s de-facto mascot for over a hundred years. Attempts to change the logo have been made since the 1920s, but generally failed due to opposition from alumni and an inability to unite the opposition in support of another name.

ASWC resolution advocates switch to test-free admissions

The ASWC resolution emphasizes the role of standardized testing in admissions as one that perpetuates inequality and lends an advantage to students from more privileged backgrounds. Due to a variety of factors, including unequal access to supplemental materials and tutoring, the average score of white students is almost 300 points higher than their black peers, while the scores of students from high-income families exceed those of students with low-income families by almost 400 points.

KWCW agrees to FCC compromise over 8-year paperwork backlog

KWCW signed an agreement with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this summer to avoid court proceedings after they discovered an 8-year backlog of unfiled documents near the end of last year. The station will continue to broadcast under a limited license under supervision from the FCC.

Tuition Increase Pressures Students’ Finances

The cost of tuition at Whitman for the 2014-2015 academic year will be raised $1,290 to $44,440, a 2.9 percent increase from last year and the smallest percent increase in the last decade.
