ASWC student fee raised by $20 for upcoming academic year

ASWC voted to increase the student fee by 20 dollars for the 2012-2013 academic year during their senate meeting last Sunday Feb. 26.

Whitman bookstore sacks plastic, adopts bagless policy

Last Thursday, November 29th, the bookstore formalized a policy it had been casually subscribing to for a while—it will no longer offer customers plastic bags unless they ask for them.

Undocumented Students Statement approved by Board of Trustees

On Nov. 17, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve a statement in support of undocumented students. The statement went up on Whitman's website on, Nov. 29.

Admissions switch to need-sensitive provokes concerns

Recently, students have been raising concerns regarding the switch in the admissions policy from need-blind to need-sensitive admission. At an ASWC town hall meeting Oct. 24 and in comments since then, students have discussed the policy, especially in terms of its effect on the diversity and the makeup of campus.

ASWC Senators propose bylaw changes

A series of revisions to ASWC's bylaws may change the way ASWC distributes funding to student organizations and initiatives . Four of the revisions would moderate use of the Travel and Student Development fund, while the fifth would institute a more rigorous review process for all media organizations on campus.

Whitties weigh options at grad school fair

Representatives from over 30 graduate schools gathered in Reid Ballroom on Oct. 6 for Whitman's annual graduate school fair, an event designed to educate students about their post-graduation options. A stream of students filtered in and out of the room throughout the afternoon, perusing the information laid out on tables and chatting with representatives from schools around the Northwest, and beyond.

Curriculum committee begins collaborating

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, Whitman's newly-formed curriculum committee had its first meeting. Formed/conceived at the end of last year in order to grapple with the problem of course compression, the committee is working towards making the curriculum more _ for students.

Looking at the ASWC budget for this school year (fiscal year 2012) compared to the budget for last school year (fiscal year 2011), there are some notable amendments.
