Debate team suspended for alcohol violations, allegations of misconduct

The Whitman Debate team was suspended for a minimum of two years on April 9th, after an investigation by administration revealed violation of team and school policies. The investigation primarily focused on violations of alcohol protocol by debaters and coaches during a 2015 tournament. Allegations of gender discrimination and potentially unsafe situations occurring over the course of the season were also presented to investigators.

Safety comes first, but policies remain unclear for alcohol, marijuana

Whitman maintains strict policies against marijuana out of concern that the federal government may cut off essential financial aid and other funding should the college be found in violation of the federal law. Despite the law and official policy, students frequently use both marijuana and alcohol at Whitman and nationwide. In response to this reality, the college quietly tries to promote safety-oriented approaches to enforcement. However, the aspects of Whitman’s policies which promote safety are often not openly endorsed by the college.

Support group helps students live with addiction

Sober at Whitman, a support group for Whitman community members struggling with addiction, recently began its second year on campus. Alcohol is the primary focus of Sober at Whitman, but the group is not intended to be exclusionary. It serves anyone with addictive relationships to alcohol or drugs.

Underage use of alcohol is an open secret. Instead of trying to criminalize or stigmatize drinking, many colleges, including Whitman, work to make sure that if students choose to drink, they can do so in a safe and responsible manner and can have access to help without the fear of repercussions.
