Spring season: Varsity sports standings

Men’s Tennis
Conference record:  1-0

Overall record:  5-3

Whitman’s men’s team is currently tied for first place with Pacific University in the NWC standings. Men’s team went to the East Coast last weekend, playing three matches in three days against nationally-ranked teams. The team, ranked 29th in the nation for Division III as of Feb. 1st, won all three matches, defeating the 23rd ranked Rhodes College team 6-3, Kalamazoo College 5-4, and the 22nd ranked University of Mary Washington 6-3. Now the team returns home to host NWC opponents, Pacific Lutheran and University of Puget Sound on the 24th and 25th of February.

The men’s team has been extremely successful in the past few years, winning the NWC title every year since 2008. Last year the men’s team went 12-0 in the NWC, and 17-7 overall; current senior Conor Holton-Burke won 2011 NWC Player of the Year, and Coach Jeff Northam won 2011 NWC Coach of the Year. Sophomore Andrew La Cava placed sixth nationally in singles last fall at the Small College National Championships in Mobile, Ala.

Women’s Tennis

Conference record:  0-1

Overall record:  1-2

Whitman’s women’s team is currently tied for eighth in NWC standings with Pacific Lutheran College. The team traveled to Linfield on the 18th, where they fell 3-6  in a match against Linfield College. On the 19th, the women’s team turned on the heat and took down University of La Verne 9-0 in Salem, Ore.

Last year the Women’s  tennis team finished in third place in the NWC,  with a record of 9-3 in Conference, and 11-9 overall. This past fall, first-year Courtney Lawless and junior  Alyssa Roberg teamed up in doubles to place sixth overall in the National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala.

Baseball

Conference record: 0-0

Overall record:  0-8

Whitman’s baseball team will be hosting their first home games this weekend against  Eastern Connecticut  State on Feb. 24, 25 and 26. They recently participated in the Desert Classic Tournament  in Phoenix, Arizona, where they fell to Cal Lutheran 14-6 and Sul Ross State 5-4.

Last season, then men’s baseball team had a record of 4-20 in the NWC and 5-30 overall, placing them in 8th for the 2011 NWC standings.  In addition, last season was the team’s first year under new coach  Jared Holowaty. Last year,  senior captains  Erik Korsmo  and  Jay Richards, and first-years Cam Young  and  Aaron Cohen received  All-NWC Baseball Honors.

Men’s Golf

Conference  record: 0-0

Overall record: 0-0

Whitman’s men’s golf team has high hopes for the upcoming season. Last fall, the men placed third in the NWC in the Fall Classic, behind University of Puget Sound and Linfield. The men’s team begins their season at the St. Paddy’s Day Invitational on March 17, in Beaumont, California.

Last year the team graduated top-performer Brian Barton ’11, who earned a spot on the All NWC Golf Team in 2009; in his junior year Barton received  medalist honors by earning the top score at the NWC Northern Colleges  Men’s Golf Tournament.

Women’s Golf

Conference record: 0-0

Overall record: 0-0

The women’s golf team is riding into the spring season with high hopes after a great showing at the 2011 Fall Classic, in which they placed second  behind George Fox. The women’s team begins their season this weekend at the Whitman Spring Three-Way in Portland, Ore.

As of last fall, the women’s team is ranked 12th in the nation among Division  III teams, and fourth in the NCAA Division III regional rankings. Sophomore standout Katie Zajicek is ranked 13th nationally, and second in the West region.
