The tricks of time

I can’t believe it’s been over a week since I’ve updated this!  it just shows how fast time flies. It’s strange how you can be so busy, and yet so not at the same time.  I wasn’t overwhelmed at work this week, but when I look at the sheer amount of stuff I’ve accomplished I’m pretty astonished.  The feeling of “I can’t believe it’s been an entire week” changes quickly to one of “I can’t believe it’s only been a week!”

Last Thursday and Friday we scrambled pretty hard to get ready for a jury trial that was supposed to happen on Monday.  We managed to get most of the work done by Friday at 6, but I’m sure superwoman lawyer came in over the weekend and finished some stuff up.  I hope I was at least able to cut down on the time she had to spend in the office though!

After a whirlwind weekend, we went to court at 9 AM sharp on Monday morning ready to pick a jury and start the trial.  However, at the last minute we learned that the defendant wanted a deal!  It was so unlikely that this was going to happen that my boss hadn’t even been considering what she would offer in a deal.  She whipped up something (I’m telling you, she’s brilliant), and the defendant ended up taking it so we didn’t go to trial.  Now we had a free week on our hands-what??  Needless to say, after we got everything worked out Monday morning not much work was accomplished Monday afternoon.  Oopsies!

Tuesday was exciting because my housemate started work with me! It definitely made the morning go a lot faster (I battled a scanner and a computer for a good 4-5 hours).  I swear, they need new technology over there in the DA’s office!  The rest of my week was spent digging through files, writing up memos, sitting through some violation of probation hearings today (I didn’t go to court for 3 straight days-isn’t that crazy???), transcribing 911 prison tapes, battling with technology, and doing some other random tasks that ADAs needed done.  The work was awesome before, but now it’s 10x better because I have a friend with me. 🙂

In between all of that, I managed to meet with another lawyer to discuss working on a data project for the National Lawyers Guild (my friend is working on this with me too!), go to class and visit Project H.O.M.E, watch two movies, read a book, write two assignments, schedule and attend an eye appointment, schedule a meeting with another ADA next week, celebrate Valentine’s Day with my housemates, run some small errands, do laundry, and go out for sushi tonight with my housemates again!  It’s been busy-no wonder I can barely remember what I actually did every day.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Wolf Pack!

I wouldn’t trade my current lifestyle for the world though.  I honestly can’t remember being busier, but I also can’t remember the last time I went to work or to class every day and didn’t grow bored or dread getting up early.  With this internship, I look forward to going to work every day and don’t care what time I leave.  A good sign for future employment?  I think so!

And now that I’ve done all that, I’ve come down with a cold just in time for my 3 day weekend.  Hopefully lots of sleep, fluid, and vitamin C will put me in tip-top shape for work on Tuesday!
