Missy gets athletic: En garde!

Melissa Navarro October 22, 2009
When we were kids all our parents told us not play with weapons for fear of poking an eye out. After being inspired by the duals in the movie “Hook" as a young child, my cousin and I took it upon ourselves to make our own weapons out of my dance batons (from my short-lived ballet days). We took off the protective rubber ends to make them look like real swords. This was a great idea . . . until an eye was indeed poked. Not out, but still painful according to my cousin. Lesson learned.

Whitman athlete of the week: Rachel Shober, first-year volleyball player

J. Staten Hudson October 22, 2009
As any volleyball player will tell you, one of the most important characteristics of a solid player is a solid head. Being able to cope with the pressure, weather the swings and remain emotionally stable in a tight game all comes with experience. But for first-year Rachel Shober, remaining calm in important situations is already second nature. Earning a consistent spot in the regular rotation, Shober has impressed her coaches and teammates with her ability to remain focused under pressure.
The mens soccer team has relied on several first-year athletes this year after a number of key seniors graduated off last years team.

The Whitman first-year student-athlete experience

bidnamlee October 15, 2009
Being a first-year student at Whitman is an experience akin to watching a bad Michael Bay movie. You don't really know what's going on and you're not sure if you even should, but things are exploding left and right in great heaping balls of fire. The special effects are perplexing but engaging and your adrenaline is pumping for a reason you can't even quite identify.

Lakers sign Walla Walla native Thomas Kelati

jaygold October 15, 2009
After a long, somewhat unconventional, journey that has taken him around the globe, Walla Walla native Thomas Kelati has finally reached the NBA, the unquestioned and seldom attained pinnacle of professional basketball. Roughly four and a half years removed from playing collegiately at Washington State, Kelati is now playing for the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers alongside 2009 Western Conference All-Stars Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, having taken career detours in Belgium, Poland and Spain.

Summer baseball makes a comeback in Walla Walla, revives a community

J. Staten Hudson October 15, 2009
In the 1970s and early 80s, Borleske Stadium near Highway 12 was the place to go in southeastern Washington for your summer baseball fix. Some of the best college players from across the country, including future Hall of Famers,Ozzie Smith and Tony Gwynn all cracked home runs over the imposing “Green Monster" of Douglas firs that dot the outside of the field.
