Liberal Arts DIY: Build your own major

Maren Schiffer April 28, 2011
Whitman cannot always accommodate every student's particular academic interests; some students are very passionate about a field of study that Whitman does not offer as a major. A fraction of these students decide to pursue their passion by creating their own major. The process, however, often proves arduous.

Maren Schiffer April 21, 2011
Recycling programs and facilities are a bragging right of the Whitman community. However, they depend on student participation, which often is less-than-perfect.

When Whitties drink…

Hanna Kahl April 14, 2011
It's your average Friday night at Whitman College. Classes are done and the last-minute paper you chose to start at 3 a.m. is turned in. In the words of the brilliant lyricist Rebecca Black, many Whitman students are “partyin', partyin', yeah" whether or not they legitimately have the time to do so in their filled-to-the-max, Google-cal'd-out schedules. Alcohol is, for some, an important aspect of the exploratory college years.

Gender: Looking beyond socially-constructed binary

Hanna Kahl February 24, 2011

Boys are "supposed to" play with toy trucks, wrestle, never cry, get a high-paying job and marry a beautiful woman. Girls are "supposed to" have boyfriends, be emotional, marry a handsome man and cook...

Stealing from Bon Appétit small potatoes to students

Maren Schiffer February 17, 2011
In front of a sign that reads “Take One Piece of Fruit and One Dessert Only" in Jewett dining hall, a student piles fruit into his backpack, looks up to see no one is watching and grabs a few cookies before heading out the door. This isn't breaking news--it's just one of many instances of minor food theft that occur daily at Whitman.
Day of love brings pink hearts, candy, chocolate, flowers, cynicism

Day of love brings pink hearts, candy, chocolate, flowers, cynicism

Hanna Kahl February 10, 2011
Valentine's Day has long been heralded as the “day of love", especially with regards to couples. People often spend tons of money on their significant other on this holiday and go on romantic dates. At Whitman, many truly enjoy it. However, for both people in relationships and out, there is some cynicism surrounding the holiday's traditional practices as well as criticism of its social constructions.

Duck the police: Whitman’s duck myths busted

Ellie Newell February 3, 2011
Few elements of Whitman culture have garnered as much speculation as the humble Whitman duck. As ubiquitous to campus as jaywalking and flannel, the ducks have attained a mythology of their own.

Despite low profile, official beer mile inspires fierce rivalries

amychapman May 6, 2010
Every year, the 'official' beer mile takes place off campus, a few days before its Ankeny counterpart. Although the official event includes less nudity, the beer chugging—and athletic competition—remain surprisingly intense.
