Production Night Live Blog for Oct. 16

What follows is a faithful account of the production of Issue 6 (taking place the evening of Oct. 16/early morning of Oct.) as witnessed by me, The Pioneer’s Editor in Chief.

6:17 p.m.: … and I forgot to start the live blog again. Slacking on my editorial duties, yet again. Commence the second live blog of the semester!

6:18 p.m.: I yell out that the live blog is started. Natalie: “Yay! Can you give a shout out to my mom?” Natalie’s mom, here’s to you!

6:22 p.m.: I find out that Dylan is a politics minor. I now see him in a different light.

6:27 p.m.: I make a comment about how the cat photo on the Feature page looks creepy. Maddie: “It’s like saying, ‘HELLO!’.”

6:37 p.m.: Everyone in response to Sean’s music: “Why are we listening to this?!”

7:01 p.m.: Bye-bye Shelly! Well not quite yet, but she will be leaving us for Senior Sem here shortly. You know what that means…Pam takes over the Live Blog! Everyone rejoice.

7:06 p.m.: Being the varsity athlete he is, Sports Editor Quin is off production night duty for issue 6 to play his soccer game against Walla Walla U. With Quin out of commission, I take the sports editorship for the evening, resuming my old post from last fall. First order of business? Point out to Sports PA Marianne that she has the same article on the page twice.

7:20 p.m.: Shelly heads off to Senior Sem (for real this time). Queen of the Live Blog (and Production) reigns.

7:23 p.m.: Marianne expresses her confusion of Sean’s music choices, which she says vary so much week to week.

7:37 p.m.: The government shutdown is over! Muted enthusiasm washes the newsroom.

8:08 p.m.: Marianne and I ID rugby players using a combination of iPhone photos, texting, Facebook, and People Search. Welcome to journalism in the 21st century.

8:14 p.m.: Everyone relax, there is a pun on the sports page this week.

8:40 p.m.: Chief Copy Editor Matthew and I have decided to go “shot for shot” this week on the Halloween cookies. Current standings show Matthew ahead of me, 7 (4 big and 3 little) to five (all little).

8:59 p.m.: Cookie war update. The count now stands Matthew 8 (5 big and 3 little) and Pam 7 (1 big and 6 little).

9:26 p.m.: Front page and Inside News are ready for copy edit. Matthew is shocked they’re ready so early.

10:05 p.m.: Copy editing continues. Those who remain (Sean, Sarah, Dylan, Matthew, and me) debate the best majors and departments on campus. We discover there are (supposedly) 96 senior Biology majors. That’s almost a quarter of the senior class.

10:32 p.m.: Shelly enters the cookie war and immediately loses (only 4 big cookies and 3 little ones).

10:43 p.m.: Sean shows us a video of a naked man riding a bike.

11:09 p.m.: Sean asks Shelly if she were a filing extension, which filing extension she would be. Shelly would be a jpeg because then she’d be a pretty picture. Sean would be an InDesign file (obviously).

11:13 p.m.: Sean and Shelly PDF Feature. For the umpteenth time, Sean expresses his love of the animal photos. He’s right, they do rock. My socks off. That’s how cute they are.

11:21 p.m.: Tonight we learn that Sean dreams about infographics.

11:30 p.m.: Apparently Shelly isn’t talking to Matthew anymore…

11:58 p.m.: Sean checks the jumps oneee moreee timeee just so he can sleep tonight.

12:11 a.m.: Finito! Good night stars, good night air, good night Pio everywhere.
