Atmadja Duma Strachilu

Hey. I came across this gem about a year ago during the summer. The song is called “Atmadja Duma Strachilu”, sung by a women’s choir called Le Mystère des voix Bulgares, or, The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices. This choir has apparently won a Grammy and been nominated for another. According to my (not extensive) research, they perform traditional Bulgarian folk songs. If anyone knows what the English translation of the lyrics is, do let me know. Check out the song below (and enjoy the sweet video):

I am most attracted to the gorgeous harmonies in this song. The melody is stunning and peculiar to me (as an uncultured Amurrican) and the harmonies are cool and surreal. The way these women’s voices blend is brilliant; you can tell that they have really put in some years together. At certain points, one woman, who sings the melody, is powerfully showcased. The performance here is truly flawless and like nothing I’ve ever heard.

Le Mystère des voix Bulgares have albums released on some pretty cool labels, including 4AD and Nonesuch Records. I got their album Volume II last summer, the summer between high school and college, so nerves were high as I spent hours worrying what would become of me in a new environment. I wouldn’t say that I used this album to help put me at ease, because some of the songs freak me out, but I certainly listened to the album during many walks to and from the store (or wherever) and I was drawn in enough to temporarily forget my anxieties. That might be glorifying the whole situation a little bit.
Enjoy this one.  It’s cool.
