What follows is a faithful account of the production of Issue 13 (taking place the evening of Dec. 11/early morning of Dec. 12.) as witnessed by me, The Pioneer’s Editor-in-Chief.
I spent a semester abroad in northern India in fall 2012 and still crave the taste of Indian milk tea. But in the one year since I left India and grapple with trying to preserve four months of transformative memories, I can’t seem to recall what a “perfect†cup of Indian tea tastes like to me. My greatest wish right now would be to leave behind my responsibilities, board a plane to India, and stuff myself full with Indian foods. Parathas, pani puris, barfis, masala dosas and veg momos all haunt my food dreams on a daily basis.
This issue is a reflection of our thoughts and feelings over food. Our hope is that not only will you pick up this issue to not only read about our thoughts on this subject gaze at the photos that have captured beautiful moments in time, but to also use this issue as a chance to connect, discuss and reflect with other Whitman students on this very wide and varied topic. Shelly Le sits down for a Q&A with the owners of The Colville Street Patisserie, Tiffany Cain and Whitman alumnus David Christensen '99, to ask them about how they met, their favorite moments while owning the Patisserie and the downsides to being small-business owners.
This is our ninth issue of the year, and while we've passed our halfway mark of the semester and of publication, now is a better time than any to reflect on the work we've done so far this semester. This period has been a time of tremendous growth and learning. While we've hired many returning staff, we've also hired a large group of eager first-years to fill positions as reporters, columnists, photographers, illustrators, production and advertising associates. Although this is my seventh semester working for The Pioneer, I still have a lot to learn with my position. During my short time as editor-in-chief, I hope to do a lot of things that maintain the high quality standards that have been set by editors-in-chief before me, while also forging new avenues.

It's official. We're in New Orleans in one piece! Pio heads to the 92nd Annual Associated Collegiate Press (ACP)/CMA National College Media Convention in New Orleans and we just finished up our first full day of convention workshops.
What follows is a faithful account of the production of Issue 6 (taking place the evening of Oct. 16/early morning of Oct.) as witnessed by me, The Pioneer’s Editor in Chief.
I can't speak for the entire staff, but fall break (lovingly termed at Whitman as four-day) has undoubtedly been a much breath of relaxation. In the hectic weekly production cycle we have at The Pio it can be hard for people outside of the staff to remember that we're students and also hold a job that can take anywhere from five hours a week to over 40 (most people don't actually work over 40 hours a week ... I'm probably the only person on staff who is that obsessed with my job).
This afternoon was our first editors critique meeting and I can't honestly say how proud and honored I am to work with such dynamic, fun, dedicated, and good-looking (If I do say so myself!) individuals. Our majors span from BBMB to Economics, to German Studies and our non-Pio interests include soccer, watching Jeopardy!, and coffee making. We don't get a whole lot of sleep, we eat way too much pizza on production night and some of us (err, I mean Sean) have terrible taste in music. Anyway, I'm rambling. Our first print issue hit stands this week, but this is our formal hello. Hello!
